Apogee Instruments’ fan-aspirated radiation shield is designed to provide accurate measurements of air temperature with minimal power consumption. It is ideal for solar-powered sites.

Rugged, Low Power Fan
The fan has an ingress protection (IP) rating of 55, virtually eliminating moisture and dust ingress. At full speed the power requirement is 1 W (80 mA at 12 V DC). To conserve power fan speed can be reduced, via pulse width modulation (PWM), to 0.3 W at night or when wind speed is greater than 3 m s-1 without loss of accuracy. If the fan is continuously operated at full speed lifetime is rated at 50,000 hours (5.7 years). The fan includes a tachometer, allowing RPM to be mounted to detect obstruction of the fan.

Aerodynamic Shape
The curved inlet facilitates the reduction of air into the shield through the Coandã effect (tendency of fluid to follow a convex surface). The tapered diameter of the internal surface enhances air velocity through the Venturi effect (reduction in fluid pressure after flowing through a constriction). Both effects contribute to more efficient air flow and allow for a lower power fan than other fan-aspirated radiation shields on the market.

Sensor Compatibility
Sensor port adaptor plugs accommodate multiple sensors, including air temperature sensor (recommended probes are Apogee model ST-110 (included in the TS-110), thermistor with ± 0.1 C accuracy, and Apogee model ST-200 PRT with ± 0.1 C accuracy), air temperature/relative humidity probes recommended probes are E + E model EE08, Vaisala models HMP60, HMP110, and HMP155, Campbell Scientific model CS215, Rotronic model HC2-S3*, or the combination of dedicated air temperature sensor and air temperature relative humidity probe. For maximum accuracy we recommend redundant measurements of air temperature. If you use a different probe, please contact us to discuss potential cross-compatibility or our custom port adaptor options. Click here to view the Sensor Port Options.
*If the Rotronic HC2-S3 probe is used with the E3 Active Set module, it must be water-proofed before use with the Apogee TS-100 radiation shield. The E3 Active Set module is not water proof (water can infiltrate at the point where the cable enters the housing). A small length of water-proof heat shrink (ATUM heat shrink) can be used to seal the gasket where the cable enters the housing for the E3 Active Set.

Research Grade Accuracy
Extensive tests with replicate shields over the past three years have shown the TS-100 compares favorably (± 0.02˚C) to all the higher-powered industry standard fan-aspirated shields. Using our recommended ST-110 precision thermistor provides a measurement uncertainty of ± 0.1 C.

Typical Applications
Applications include air temperature and humidity measurement in weather networks, often for weather forecasting, and solar energy sites. Fan-aspirated shields are also important in the precise measurement of air temperature and humidity gradients above the land surface and in climate change monitoring.

Purchasing Options
There are two models to choose from when purchasing the shield. The TS-100 is a shield only model. The TS-110 comes with a discounted, pre-installed ST-110 precision thermistor that provides ± 0.1 C uncertainty right out of the box.

Warranty and Support
All Apogee products are backed by an industry-leading four year warranty and outstanding customer support.

+ What sensors will the shield accommodate?
The shield's sensor port is designed to easily accommodate combinations of thermistors, PRTs, and humidity probes by using one of our sensor port adaptor plugs. We currently stock port adaptors for Apogee models: ST-110 precision thermistor and Apogee ST-300 PRT, Campbell Scientific model CS215, Vaisala models: HMP110, HMP60, and HMP155, and Rotronic model HC2-S3. If you use a different probe, please contact us to discuss compatibility with a custom port adaptor. To view a technical drawing of sensor port adaptor options click here.
+ What is the difference between the TS-100 and TS-110?
The TS-100 is a shield only model. The TS-110 includes a discounted, pre-installed ST-110 thermistor that provides ± 0.1 C uncertainty.
+ What size of a pipe does the shield mount to?
The shield is designed to hang from a standard IPS horizontal pipe ranging from 1.25 inch (32 mm) to 2 inch (51 mm) in diameter.
+ Does the TS-100 fit EPA regulations?
Yes it does. Please see the temperature line from the QA Handbook from the EPA.
+ How do the specifications for the TS-100 compare with RM Young/Met One?
Extensive testing with replicate shields over the past three years has shown the TS-100 compares favorably (+/- 0.02 C) to higher power aspirated shields from Met One and R.M. Young. For more information and to view the data, click here.
